After a successful Friday night show with Revolt, Resist, Riot!, EVE returned to their new regular home of Signature Brew in East London for the second show of their weekender.
Friday saw some brilliant matches take place, with the likes of Alexxis Falcon, Chantal Jordan, Charlie Morgan and Laura Di Matteo stealing the show.
The Saturday night had a lot of live up to, so let’s get straight into the action…
Chantal Jordan vs Emersyn Jayne
Following strong showings by both the previous evening, Jordan and Jayne opened the show with a very good contest.
The EVE Champion was fresh of the back of her bloody encounter with Charli Evans and wasted no time getting stuck into the up and coming 18-year-old.
Jordan’s kickboxing and MMA background makes her an interesting watch, with her hard strikes usually sending shockwaves through the crowd as well as her opponent.
Emersyn is exactly the type of seasoned pro that Jordan can learn from to develop her in-ring skills further. She works the match really well and despite a couple of small botched moments makes the contest an enjoyable one.
It is Jayne who wins the battle the same way she beats Chevs, minus the thumbtacks, to make it two defeats from two for Jordan - but she’d have a chance at redemption later on.
Ava vs Debbie Dahmer
Ava got some real heat here, the crowd were not backing her at all. Chants of ‘We hate Ava’ and ‘Shut the fuck up’ while she was trying to cut her promo showed that her stock had grown since the night before.
The person charged with trying to give the crowd what they wanted in their quest to get Ava to ‘shut up’ was Debbie Dahmer.
I mentioned how on the Friday night Debbie needed something extra to help get her over. It turns out the extra she was missing may have been Ava.
The crowd’s hatred of Ava helped get Debbie over in a big way here. Don’t get me wrong she still needs a little more momentum, but putting her against real heel character will give her that extra push.
The backing of the crowd wasn’t enough to help Debbie though as Ava started a new undefeated streak by picking up the win.
This match was okay, there had been a lot of strong matches before it over both shows but it did its job nicely.
Charli Evans vs Skye Smitson w/ Livvii Grace
As with at the 229 the biggest entrance pop of the night easily goes to Charli Evans. The Aussie star was wrestling her first match at Signature Brew taking on one third of The Uprising.
As you’d expect from these two performers, this was a hard-hitting battle and a most enjoyable one. Big shock, Chevs was the big fan favourite again here - who’d have thought…
The crowd made Skye aware that she was gonna get her ‘head kicked in’ and that Charli would ‘fuck her up’, even Smitson herself couldn’t help but crack a smile at those chants.
As if you didn’t know it already, these two are absolutely tough as nails and the barrage of strikes and kicks they dealt each other proved they have chemistry as well.
Charli would pick up her first win back on British soil by pinning Smitson after around 15 minutes.
Smitson and Livvii Grace beat down Charli after the match and accuse her of holding the EVE Tag Titles ‘hostage’. It’s at that moment the roof comes off as Charli reveals that she and Medusa Complex teammate, NXT UK’s Emilia McKenzie, will defend the titles at EVE’s next show against The Uprising.
Rhio vs Chantal Jordan
It’s double duty for Jordan, and her third match of the weekend. It’s unaware who Rhio was meant to be facing but we assume Chantal was back in because of someone else backing out.
If Jordan was tired from her match less than an hour beforehand she didn’t show it. A fierce attacking game plan really put Rhio on the back foot.
But the North West Strong member fought back strongly and made sure Jordan felt every single blow that was landed upon her.
A particular crowd highlight was them trying to serenade Rhio with a chant of ‘Purple Hair’ to Prince’s iconic hit ‘Purple Rain’.
Rhio did a great job of really working Chantal’s left leg the longer the match went on. Jordan held on well and even mounted a late rally.
But, in the end, having pulled triple duty over the weekend saw Jordan just run out of steam and Rhio inflict her third defeat of the weekend.
It’s clear EVE are giving Rhio a big push and while Chantal lost all three of her matches she did herself proud and showed why she’s one of the best young talents in the country.
Livvii Grace vs Laura Di Matteo
Some excellent news here for, as despicable as she is with her heelish tactics, it is great to see Livvii Grace back in the ring.
Laura Di Matteo was coming off the back of a huge win on Friday night against Charlie Morgan, in which she became the number one contender to the International Championship.
This was a contest of different styles, with Livvii’s bruiser persona against the more technical holds and strikes of Laura.
Unsurprisingly for The Uprising member, the crowd was right in the corner of Laura, backing her as she endured a ferocious onslaught from Grace.
And the Italian made the night even worse for the Uprising as she made Livvii tap out. Another decent contest that maybe could’ve gone a little longer.
Alexxis Falcon vs Jetta
This was a battle of two performers who won their matches the night before, somebody had to add a loss to their weekend record in this match up.
Jetta tried to tempt Alexxis into a pre-match dance to Carly Simon before the bell rang, but the Iron Queen was having none of it and the crowd singing Nobody Does It Better made her literally put her head in her hands.
Fired up by the crowd’s backing of her opponent, Falcon started strongly before Jetta worked her way back into the match.
Falcon is on a great run but has a strange momentum by which she’s currently heel in some companies but face in others. This is somewhere she’s a heel and I think it suits her a lot better, she’s just brilliant when she’s angry or annoyed.
And Jetta did plenty to annoy her here, seemingly having an answer for everything thrown her way. The number of screams from Falcon as Jetta kept kicking out of her attacks was deafening.
It was Falcon who lost her unbeaten weekend to the former EVE Champion who made her submit. This was a really strong match and made both women look great.
Emersyn Jayne vs Rhio - EVE Championship
With the EVE Championship on the line Emersyn Jayne and Rhio, like Chantal Jordan before them, were pulling double duty.
Again, we suspect this match was the cause of injuries and absentees, but that didn’t make it any less of a spectacle.
Another brutally hard-hitting contest that pitted surely two of the strongest wrestlers at EVE against each other. The crowd was, for once this evening, fairly split down the middle in terms of who they were rooting for.
Both were clearly feeling the impact of having already wrestled, but they barely let it show as they unleashed fury on each other for a full 18 minutes.
A huge tope by Jayne to the outside nearly catches the crowd off guard as it sends both women flying, luckily the sea of fans parts in time, but we can’t imagine it was a pleasant knock to the floor for Rhio.
Jayne retained her title after a brutal contest that showed why both these competitors are some of the very best in BritWres at the moment.
It won’t be long before Rhio gets another shot at the EVE title, and hopefully one with more build and not on a double shift night, because she is an absolute star.
For Jayne, it’s another solid title defence that rewards the faith that EVE showed by putting the belt back on her in the first place.
After the match Jetta came back out and praises Emersyn, saying it’s ‘criminal’ that she’s not signed, and finally challenge Emersyn to a rematch for the EVE Championship.
Conclusion
There are plenty of positives, and a couple of negatives, to take from this show.
Firstly, credit must be given to the team at EVE for ensuring both weekender shows went ahead. A mixture of Covid and injuries meant that there was a lot of moving matches around, changing plans and finding back ups, so to put on two shows in 48 hours is extremely impressive.
The performers all did admirably under the circumstances and made sure that both shows were worth the money - whether you saw them in person or watched at home.
As someone who couldn’t make this show but watched from home there is a negative in terms of the viewing experience.
This is not down to the talent of the camera crew themselves, more so the drawbacks that the venue like Signature Brew has.
It’s quite small and confined which means that there’s a lot of action close ups but some wider shots would be nice too, although I appreciate that given the size of the venue that’s a tall order.
There’s also the issue that you can often hear an unidentified person in the background giving instructions to the camera operator, which is a little distracting and bizarre.
However, this was another largely enjoyable show from the EVE team and one they should be proud of.
The final two matches were for sure the best of the night and sent the crowd home very happy indeed.
