TNG returns, again. After their planned show in Cardiff was postponed due to changing Covid restrictions, MDRN NMD are back at the Frog & Bucket in Manchester with more Tuesday night wrestling.
Their debut show was a great example of what British wrestling has to offer and the card for tonight promises more of that same energy.
Lykos Gym (Kid Lykos II & Nico Angelo) vs North West Strong (Joe Kessler & Rhio)
We kick things off between two teams representing some of the more notable groups in the UK. Although both teams fielded a rare combination as Rhio and Joe Kessler teamed to face Kid Lykos II and Nico Angelo.
Everyone in this match looked great as they went all out to put on an entertaining opener, Joe Kessler getting to throw his smaller opponents around in particular showed off his strengths.
Either team could have easily come out on top in an even contest but it was Nico Angelo who got the win for LYkos Gym. Lovely opener that really set the tone.
Mad Kurt vs Luke Jacobs
A very difficult match to call as British Wrestlings resident Internet troll (Mad Kurt) goes up against one its toughest young competitors in Luke Jacobs.
This defied all expectations though as they crafted a very well told story that managed to get Kurt crowd sympathy by the end without causing people to turn on Jacobs.
Kurt showed lots of fighting spirit against the superior Jacobs but did eventually lose after his brother at ringside was forced to throw in the towel.
Mad Kurt might come across as too comedic at times but matches like this show the character can work.
Chris Ridgeway vs Kid Lykos
Anyone who has seen either of these two wrestle before will know how good they are but this match surpassed even those expectations.
Simply put this was a masterpiece of a match. Ridgeway is known for his technical grappling skills but Lykos shone in that regard here, more than holding his own.
Without sitting down to watch it again it would be impossible to give a more vivid description but it’s safe to say this is a must watch and an early contender for Match of the Year honours.
Scott Oberman vs Lee Hunter
Kicking off the second half with an almost ‘clash of generations’ contest as one of the scenes veterans comes against one of the rising stars.
Both men played their role very well as Hunter outsmarted Oberman on a number of occasions but also let the younger man on top at times.
There were plenty of big moves by both men that really caught the eye and even though Hunter won in the end but Oberman should be proud of his performance and the constant improvement he is making in the ring.
Everett Connors vs ELIJAH vs Detective Gene Munny vs “Stone Cold” Man Like DeReiss Austin Steve
A little bit of that classic Tuesday Night Graps weirdness (in a good way) as we get a four way wager match. The loser would have to give something up, ELIJAH would lose his beard, Munny his detective agency (don’t ask), Connors his and his partner Charli Evans’ visas and Dereiss would lose his Stone Cold gimmick.
Very entertaining and fast paced action with a good balance of more serious moments and well timed comedy. The moments where Detective Munny’s internal monologue interrupt proceedings had the whole venue smiling ear to ear.
In the end it was DeReiss who lost and we witnessed him sadly giving up the Stone Cold persona in a genuinely hilarious piece of overacting. This was comedic wrestling done to a brilliant level.
Dean Allmark vs Martin Kirby
Two of the wrestlers in the UK who most deserve more attention. Both men are smooth as silk in the ring, have bags of charisma and can work a wide variety of styles.
From the first seconds this was right up my street. A long methodical feeling out process of holds gave way to some of the slickest technical exchanges you’ll see in a ring.
This is a match that deserves to be watched by everyone who aspires to step into the ring, it was absolutely packed to the gills with nuance and subtle storytelling that were honestly captivating.
In the end we witnessed a slight shock result as Kirby made Allmark tap out. Both of these men came out looking like superstars and British Wrestling should be proud to have them.
All in all MDRN NMD really hit this show out of the park. It was well paced and varied with every match delivering. Long may TNG continue.
