Celebrating the Women of BritWres on International Women’s Day
FOR TOO many years the women that comprise the BritWres scene have flown too far under the radar.
Pre-pandemic it seemed, aside from a handful or promotions, you’d only see the same few female competitors on match cards across the country.
Now, however, that is changing and in this writer’s opinion, the BritWres women’s division would rival any other division in the world. Not just in terms of top stars and pure talent but also absolute strength in depth and unique qualities.
We are blessed with a division where every single competitor brings something new, different, special to the table.
Let’s just look at some of the incredible names in the scene and I’ll explain what I mean…
First up, Lizzy Evo, undoubtedly one of the best in the country right now. She is the Scouse superstar who knows how to use the mic to incredible effect. A heel everywhere she goes, apart from ICW which is insane to see, she has made herself must see with not only her promo ability and meme-worthy taunts, but her overall talent in the squared circle.
The same can be said for Gisele Shaw. Canadian, yes, but an absolute stand out of the British circuit. Like Lizzy, she’s one of the best in the country and is finally getting the big shot she deserves at a major promotion a Impact Wrestling. She’s got the look, the charisma, the talent and screams star power.
And speaking of star power, let’s move onto The Glamour, Mariah May. Whereas Gisele came over from North America and broke BritWres, May is a rising star on these shores who is just starting to crack the American scene. As I write this she’s in the middle of a mega US tour and gaining momentum wherever she goes.
Let’s move on to someone completely different, perhaps one of the most unique stars on the BritWres scene at the moment - Clementine. There’s no easy way to define Clementine; she’s bonkers, she’s crazy, she’s fun, she’s nerdy, she has charisma in absolute buckets. What she needs, nay deserves, now is a chance to prove herself. By the time this goes out she’ll have had a mega match at EVE against Max the Impaler and we hope she gets similar opportunities this year because she is gonna be huge!
Then you have the bruisers on the scene, the likes of Gia Adams, Ivy, Mercedez Blaze, Skye Smitson and Taonga are all absolutely terrifying when you see them in the ring - in the best way possible. And, again, they are all completely different in the ways they go about systematically dismantling their opponents.
There are also the up and coming stars of the scene; people like Lucia Lee, Chantal Jordan, Amira Blair, Beau Belles, Rebecca Reznor, Ava, Echo Reed, Safire and more who will all ensure the next batch of talent in BritWres is just as good…if not better.
I could go on listing people all day, but then that’s exactly how long we’d be here. But I’m sending love to all the incredible women/gender neutral/non-binary competitors we have over here who are thriving. And a special shoutout to two women on the shelf at the moment who I wish the best in their recoveries, Hannah Taylor and Jayde!
The point is, we have a lot of great talent over here and it’s amazing to see these competitors all doing an amazing job. Companies like EVE, Catch, TNT and more deserve special recognition for really making strong storylines for their female competitors.
It’s baffling but there are still some promotions out there that won’t book a single women’s match on the card, or maybe just one singles match. A word to all those companies, you know who you are, two women on your show is NOT a women’s division. Give these wrestlers more time, more storylines, more of the spotlight because they deserve it!
As I mentioned before, I’d put the BritWres women’s division up there against any other division in the world and to see some promotions still not appreciate that talent in disheartening.
But, there are companies out there doing excellent work. Giving women the spotlight and letting them run with it. And to those companies I say thank you!
And of course it’s not just the in-ring performers. There are women doing amazing work all across wrestling, from running promotions, working for promotions, commentators, designers, gear makers, trainers, all of those who keep people safe at shows and make sure everybody has a good time.
And then there’s the fans as well. The lifeblood of this theatrical, crazy, amazing sport we all love.
If you’ve read this far then thank you as well and remember to continue to thank the hard working competitors who put their bodies on the line every time they step in the ring - they are the real heroes and they’re the reason we love wrestling.
Happy International Women’s Day!
