Why I Love Wrestling: Celebrating The Female Stars of Indie Wrestling

IT’S NO secret that we here at Grapple Theory are huge fans of the women’s wrestling scene here in the UK. It’s a division that is thriving at the moment.

We wrote a whole piece earlier this month to celebrate International Women’s Day - you can check that out here - and we think it really showcases how incredible the scene is at the moment.

We’ve also spoken to many of the female stars of BritWres about their career and continue to be inspired every day by the strength, power, talent and all round incredibleness of the people that make up the scene.

So now, to end Women’s History Month, we wanted to hear from the stars of the scene - wrestlers, podcasters, trainees etc. about why THEY love wrestling.

So without further ado…here’s what they said:

“When I found wrestling I needed it. Wrestling saved my life. This is the only thing I know. The only thing I want to be in, I want to do, I want to be part of. It’s the only think I thing about every single day and want to do every single day.

“It’s the only thing that brings me joy, even though it brings me a shit ton of sadness sometimes. I’m so grateful for it, every single day”

“I love wrestling because it’s provided me an escape from reality and simultaneously combined entertainment, art, and sports all into one!”

“I love wrestling because it’s so empowering, being able to do what you love on a weekly basis is an absolute dream, I love being able to wrestle and go from strength to strength with my performances - it’s given me a new life of confidence and changed my life in every positive aspect possible!

“Wrestling for me started during the divas era, I was hooked watching melina and have loved her every since.”

“Wrestling allows us to forget about life for a while. It distracts me from any difficulties that I’m having elsewhere, allowing me to be consumed in something that I love.”

“The big part of why I love wrestling is how it is ever-evolving. The stories wrestlers tell with their in-ring personas get enriched by time, and yet they are free to deviate from it with a snap of a finger.

“Wrestling is also a very hands-on expression of one's self, and I am always left at awe of how every minute of a show unfolds.

“I look up to the women in wrestling for they always personify a piece of my multi-faceted self — the good and the bad. Always be looking up to their passion and hardwork!”

“I love wrestling because it gives me a stage to show to all people who have dreams that they can achieve anything if they believe in themselves and get things done, no matter how hard it can be at times.

“There's no words to describe the feeling I have when the French crowd chants "thank you Kira" when I return, or when some young aspiring wrestler come to me and say I'm an inspiration to them.”

“Wrestling - at its very best - can bring everyone from every walk of life together. Whether they’re drawn into the story, the spectacle, the athleticism, or just because they’re curious.

“Wrestling has something for everyone. Like a symphony for the eyes, everyone can draw their own conclusions and opinions from it - everyone has their own take. Unity is important. The shared experience - that’s what I love about wrestling.”
